Statistics alumna Sheeza talks about letting your interests drive your decisions & her work in finance as a risk analyst.

During her first two years after graduating, Sheeza worked for an online brokerage company before becoming a business intelligence analyst, collecting and reporting on data.

After that, Sheeza started exploring her options in finance and fell in love with investment risk management because she enjoyed working with numbers.

Today, she is a risk analyst on the investment risk team at Scotiabank.

U of T Statistical Sciences: What does a typical workday look like for you?

Sheeza Khan: My work revolves around supporting the portfolio management team by monitoring their portfolios as well as their risk numbers. I also keep track of their strategy and whether the team deviates from it. It also includes investigating any deviations and weekly reporting.

Everyday is different, it really depends on what the issue at hand is. There’s always something new going on.

How did you become interested in the statistical sciences program at U of T?

In my first or second year, I did two statistics courses because I was very interested in math and quantitative concepts as well as the analytical aspects of it. My professor, Professor Gibbs, was very engaging. I really enjoyed the two introductory courses, so I just kept taking more and more statistics courses. I really let my interests drive my decision on what degree to pursue.

How has your degree prepared you for a real-life work environment?

One of the courses I took in my final year exposed me to what it would be like to work with a client and doing analyses according to what the client wanted. I think that prepared me quite well for a real-life work environment.

What makes you passionate about your work?

I’m really grateful that I get to apply what I learned in university to my day-to-day job. It drives me to stay on top of things and to keep learning and growing.

What advice do you have for students entering the program?

Reach out to industry professionals to learn more about what they do. They’re always willing to help you. If you come across someone on LinkedIn, don’t be afraid to reach out and explore your options.
